There’s a big difference between upgrading fixtures and completely remodeling or build a new bathroom.
As you might expect, your budget will determine the scope of your project.
If you’ve got a bigger budget, however, you may want to consider a few remodeling upgrades.
Households with young children may make better use of a tub while older homeowners may prefer a simple shower.

If you’re remodeling in preparation for a home sale, you may be tempted to go with a higher-end shower with multiple spray heads, aromatherapy and a built-in sound system.
Slate and other natural stones are popular, but you must be sure to check the porosity when you use them in your bathroom remodel.
You may consider ceramics, porcelain, marble or even granite instead.
Tiles will need to be slightly angled toward the drain, and grout between the tiles adds slip resistance.
Tiles can be installed by the homeowner with a little skill and patience.
In fact, even a tired, old sink can get a new lease on life with some updated hardware.
Stainless steel faucets paired with brushed brass cabinet hardware will make your bathroom look cheap and cobbled together — no matter how much you’ve spent.
Today, toilets and sinks come in many different styles, most of which are high-efficiency models.
Whether you plan to live in your home for many years or are remodeling it to put it up for sale, high-efficiency plumbing and electrical fixtures are a good investment.
Cabinet hardware such as hinges and handles can also be the perfect accent to finish off a bathroom.
After all, it just wouldn’t do to pair rustic country cabinets with sleek, modern faucets and spouts.
The cost will depend entirely on the style for which you’re shopping.
It’s great for bathrooms as it’s waterproof and resistant to spills.
The downside to marble is that it’s prone to cracks and staining, and it requires regular maintenance.
But, because porcelain has a low porosity, it requires a special setting compound.
Wood is sometimes used as an accent on a bathroom floor.

Use existing plumbing and electrical systems whenever possible.
Oftentimes, the plumbing is run beneath the house and involves very little work between the walls.
In a remodel, you don’t usually have have to install new systems, but an additional bathroom will require new lines.
It will also prevent a situation in which great injury results from improper materials, construction or installation.
But how much you’ll recoup depends on the part of the country in which you live.
A deep, luxurious tub can be a ticket to paradise, as can a large, walk-in shower with jets that massage you from head to toe.
Even if there had been a shower where you’re putting the tub, the tub will weigh considerably more even empty.
Showers have many of the same amenities, including all-over body jets, lighting, aromatherapy and stereos.
If you have room, a shower can be quite spacious, but even a small shower can provide a world of escape.
This helps the grout provide grip on a wet surface, and it’s easier to provide a drain slope with smaller tile.
Similarly, a pedestal sink is more accessible for someone in a wheelchair, while a sink and cabinet would be a better choice for a house with small children to store soaps, tub toys and cleaners.
Basins also come in many shapes, with vessel sinks (those appear to be free-standing bowls) becoming increasingly popular.
Some finishes are harder to keep clean than others, so consider what sort of use the bathroom will see.
Vanities are where you put your morning face on, and it’s only natural that you’d want an attractive place to get ready for the day.
A vanity over the sink is convenient for most people, but those with a very small bathroom may elect to place the vanity just outside of the bathroom.
If wall space is a consideration, vanities may also be placed in corners.
As its name implies, it keeps water from splashing back onto the wall where it can cause damage and mold.
A popular option for backsplashes is a set of interlocking tiles that attach with normal bonding material.
Sewer lines must have a specific grade to ensure drainage to the city lines, and certain lines have to be of a specified diameter to accommodate a certain volume of that drainage.
Not only can contractors be reasonably expected to install new plumbing according to local and state codes, they should also be able to obtain the necessary permits.
These put a demand on your power supply and its interface, the breaker panel (or fuse box in older homes).
These have their own requirements regarding placement, such as how high they must be off the floor.
An oversized closet can sacrifice some of its floor space for a half bath, or a large bathroom can be turned into a half bath and a smaller full bath.
When placing a half bath, you can keep costs down by locating it near existing plumbing.
If your half bath is located near a living space, such as a dining room or living room, extra sound insulation around pipes and in the walls is a good idea — especially if you entertain guests frequently.

However, it can get expensive fast, so set priorities and decide where to splurge and where to save.
In the latter case, it’s worth getting a quote from at least three bathroom contractors.
And if everything else is in good shape, a little new paint may be all you need.
An older couple might also want a safety tub, although selling a home later on with such a tub could decrease its appeal.
These days, many people opt for massaging showerheads and models that can remember your temperature preferences.
But this is more likely to hamper a sale than it is to seal it (potential buyers may balk at something so “over the top”).
Some stone types require a lot of maintenance and some may simply be unsuitable for a shower.
Whatever material and color you go with, use tiles no larger than 6 inches on your shower floor.
Some people will save money by purchasing a premade shower pan.
But if you have any doubts about your ability, it’s generally worth it to hire a professional.
Be sure that any new fixtures you buy complement the rest of the bathroom.
Even people who aren’t particularly concerned about the environment can appreciate the lower utility bills.
They should match the style and the finish of the sinks, towel racks and showerheads hardware.
Because linoleum expands and contracts, you must let it acclimate to the room before installation.
It’s a beautiful choice, but installing it correctly generally requires the help of a professional.
Ask the manufacturer about which compound is best; don’t rely on the sales person.
The cost varies according to the type of wood, which should be chosen carefully as it will be exposed to near-constant moisture.
Any changes made to the internal electrical or plumbing systems inside of your walls will require permits and contractors.
As you’re recouping only around 60 percent of your investment, completely moving things doesn’t usually pay off.
Moving the plumbing isn’t as difficult when you have a basement or good crawlspace.
The work must still be done by a licensed plumber or electrical contractor, but it’s much less disruptive to the interior of your home.
But there are differences, especially where electrical and plumbing are concerned.

This will prevent a situation in which you have invested hundreds or even thousands of dollars in a project only to have to tear it all out due to ordinances.
A new bathroom adds value to any home, especially when there is only one to begin with.
Even a small corner shower can be an escape with the right upgrades.
You have to be sure there’s enough room for the tub, and you also have to make sure that the floor can support the weight of a full tub and the person using it.
By making this among your first considerations, you can prevent damage and severe injuries.
Likewise, a home with small children may get better use from a shallow, modern tub.
There is practically no limit to the amount of luxury that can be added to bath tubs these days.
Built-in soap and shampoo dispensers keep things handy, and some even spray a cleaning solution on the shower surfaces after you’ve gotten out.
Natural stone can make a small shower feel like a relaxing hideaway while light ceramics make a small shower feel larger.
Shower/tub combos involve more plumbing and can cost a little more.
Larger tiles are also good for small showers, but remember that shower floor tiles should be no larger than 6 inches square.
Tiles can go up the wall to the ceiling, and some continue on the ceiling to make the shower look like a separate room altogether.
Sleek and modern fixtures give a bathroom an updated look while classic styles offer warmth and comfort.
For a high-end look, some sinks have artistic appearances and faucets that resemble everything from an old-fashioned water pump to a cascading waterfall.
A guest bathroom might not see as much use as the common bathroom down the hall.
In a large bathroom, there’s usually space to erect a small wall and give the vanity its own room.
This allows for more coverage in less time than it would take to set individual tiles.

It’s best to locate your new bathroom near existing plumbing.
It’s for these reasons and considerations that licensed contractors should be called in to add plumbing.
This also gives you a means of legal recourse if the job is done incorrectly.
But hiring an electrician will ensure that things are properly wired and installed.
Discuss with your contractor whose responsibility it is to get the permits.
This is a question that many homeowners ask themselves right after deciding that a new bath is needed.
A half bath should be from 3 to four feet wide and 6 to 8 feet long.
Some people have put them under stairs while others have made dormers into half baths.
At the very least, a half bath should have a toilet, a sink, and a mirror.
If that’s not possible, try to keep it as close as possible.
DIY Farmhouse Bathroom Vanity by shanty-2-chic.com
I am excited about this project today would be an extreme understatement.
I wanted something that covered most of the countertop to keep my son from getting too much water on the wood.
Seriously…what could be so scary about either of those?
Its getting them in the right spot the first time so the dang door opens and closes properly.
There has to be an easier way to get that little task done with out loosing sleep.
The amount of plans there is mind-boggling… there’s like 16, 000 plans or something like that for tons of different projects.
I can’t swipe up for some reason 🙁 what brand are they?
What are the measurements of the piece once it’s all put together?
I love the choice of colors and the vanity build is truly unique.
I would be interested to see if you have ideas that would simplify the process of attaching the door in the cabinet.
I really need to get some wood to make one for my little bathroom.
Do you ladies think that someday, you might be able to do a tutorial with tons of pictures, like you already do, on building that door and hinge placement so there is no binding.?
Do you put a spacer in between the wood, do you just eye ball it, do you have someone else make the holes so its their fault it doesn’t open and close.
Any idea on an approximate price for the vanity itself?

Kohler Brockway Sink In The Cottage Bathroom! by manhattan-nest.com
Want to take a look at how great this sink looks in a bathroom?
Although my tiles would be ceramic and these look to be marble, but whatever.
You are very lucky and you do not waste time buying stuff you like.
One of the things that sold me on our house was the fact that there were two kitchens with two big cast iron sinks and integral drainboards.
We salvaged one in the third floor bathroom, and we still have the other one.
The picture of the sinks in their original location are in the middle of this post.
Can you imagine the kitchen you could build around something like that?
I think it’s been on the cover of some of their bathroom books too.
I didn’t really think about the added maintenance of brass fixtures vs.
Laying all the boards out and spraying them is annoying but important.
Installing mid summer do a small joint (like a nickel); installing midwinter in dry air use a wider space.
Now all you need is a clawfoot tub with outside painted black.
But not as hard to step into daily to shower in as clawfoot tubs, because they aren’t as deep, and don’t have extra space wasted underneath for the feet.
I think that sink is going to look adorable in your bathroom.
I have nearly an exact match–ours is an old art sink, nabbed off the walls from an elementary school that was about to be demoed.
We built out the wall a little bit by 6″ so that when mounted it has a shelf behind it.
Since the cleats have to be installed exactly where the sink needs to be mounted, it will make mounting it a lot easier for you.
Seller decided to fix some termite damage and possible garage roof issue out of pocket and delisted right after we spotted it.
I don’t need it for my house, and it didn’t really fit into the cottage plan either, but come on…that’s a good-looking sink!
The holes accommodate 2 separate faucets, so it has the functionality of double sinks but the simplicity and glamor of a single basin.
I don’t know how old this particular sink is, but it’s actually still in production!
The reclaimed wood shelf, the mirror, the sconce situation…it’s all just so nice!
They have a long history of supporting art and artists… yay!
I just love them, and love all those bathroom photos you posted.
The trick is just to install the car siding backwards to get the crisp look of square groove instead of the standard v-groove.
Otherwise when shrinks/swells with seasonal humidity you’ll end up seeing the unpainted portions, or having your paint crack along all the joints if you’ve painted after installing.
Can your second floor bear the weight of a clawfoot tub?
Deeper then modern tubs, so you can take a really deep bath.
It was 7 years ago and my 4 year at the time was taking art lessons over the summer.
Anyway, it sat in our garage for 6 years until we eventually built our new “old” house and we put this in the boys’ bathroom.
Be sure to add a lot of blocking in your framing (we used 2x6s horizontally between the 16 oc studs, with extra vertical studs below it).
It’s got a claw foot tub in the downstairs bathroom, high elevation cistern toilet (with an ugly ass “updated” wood-framed cistern) and an “updated” sink that’s nice; it just doesn’t fit with anything else on the property as it’s super modern style.
Good luck with the house—sounds like a really fun project!
I never thought about much before, but seeing the production really drove home how much expertise and love really goes into making these things.

Partly it’s because most people just don’t need to fill the sink with water.
And partly it’s because these pop up drains often stop working not too long after they’ve been installed, and fail to hold water in the sink for any length of time.
The vessel fills up before the water starts to race down the drain, as if it needs a vacuum to be created to suck the water down.
It had a mirror finish which is what you want with your new bowl.
This is a well made and crafted product with no sharp or rough edges.
