Many remodelers are happy to discover that updating the kitchen countertops actually makes the cabinets look new, too. If you’re installing new, or new-to-you materials, measuring is paramount. Note and measure the placement of all appliances, sinks and faucets. Check the tops of the cabinets with a level from front to back, and side to side. Remember that countertops are one of the last parts of a kitchen installation. The only exception is the wall or backsplash behind the counter. So, take care, and then completely mask and protect your new counters while you do any finishing to the walls behind them. And while some are easier than others, all would give your kitchen a fresh look for less. But there are a few guidelines that will help to make the process easier and the results more professional. Always measure the length of your countertops from the back wall, to the nearest 1/8”. Then, adjust the level of all the cabinets with shims until they are level in every direction. Then remove the excess from your shims and get ready to put your countertops in. No matter how careful you are, bumps can happen during installation. Here, thin applications of different coatings were layered directly over an existing laminate counter and within three days, the job was complete. The part we like best about such an approach is how it enables you to employ leftover or reclaimed tile.

Sealing the mold with a dark caulk lets you see it easily, so you can clean any excess that could create an uneven countertop surface. The top surface will be against the melamine, so make sure the mold is as smooth as possible. Test the tint with a small batch of concrete to check the final color.RUST OLEUM 246068 Quart Interior Countertop Coating 1 Qt by amazon.com
Coating is entirely, washable, moisture and chemical resistant. I used a paint brush to cut the corners and then used a sponge roll brush. Counter paint was a little sticky still buy from my understating, it stays that way. Then used a brush to get the bubbles out and make it look nice and even. I have to say that it is not a simple process when using this paint. Stirred product for at least a minute before pouring into paint tray. Hardest part was getting behind faucet- used foam brush on that. I painted section by section and started behind the faucet first. I would certainly use this again but would only recommend for small sink areas as it is challenging to work with. You will have to touch up some spots, especially if your counter was a lighter color. I ended up using my good wooster for cutting in and was extremely lucky to get it to paint thinner in time. It is fully cured (after 3 days) and scratch/dent resistant! I only have one complaint (only reason for 4 stars rather than 5) – it smells horrible! You must wear a mask and keep all windows/doors open! Contains antimicrobial protection that inhibits the growth of mold, mildew and other odor or stain causing microbes. Tint-able to sixteen colors to coordinate with existing flooring, fixtures, etc. I applied the poly with a sponge roller and seriously pourrrrred it on my counter. I have used chalkboard paint on other surfaces and it’s the best. After looking online at various products, this product seemed like the best option. Vacuumed area and used tack cloth to gather any trace of sanding dust. Used a foam brush for corners and high density foam roller for flat areas. The manufacturer says one coat should cover but that is rediculius! I waited 24 hours between coats and lightly sanded between my second and third coat. It covers very well, if you use the method according to the instructions (foam roller brush). The only drawback to the product is that it contains xylene, and therefore has a very strong odor. Use disposable tools, because you’ll want to throw it all away when you’re done. Keep the paint jar closed when not in use and get all brushes, trays and rollers used out of your house as soon as you are finished.Concrete’S Changing Colors by thisoldhouse.com
How To Do A Concrete Countertop | Duration 14 Minutes 42 Seconds The color recipe is saved in the shop, in the event of damage or for future kitchen additions. Since just about any pigment can be added to the mix, the possibilities are endless. And because each countertop is handcrafted, it has an artisanal quality that other manufactured materials lack. The earlier the dyes go into the hopper, the more uniform the color. The amount of dye is usually between 1 and 10 percent of the amount of portland cement in the mix. Later, wet concrete will be poured into the form, which includes a cutout for a sink. If you want a terrazzo look, for example, the counter surface can be ground down to expose aggregates as varied as red volcanic rock or colorful ground-up glass, depending on the desired effect. Vibrating the mixture for about five minutes gets rid of air bubbles that form during the mixing and spreading, and is the key to creating solid, crack-resistant countertops. And since it weighs about 16 pounds per square foot (about the same as granite), the base cabinets have to be made of at least 3/4-inch plywood to support it. Seams are filled with an epoxy colored to match the countertop, so joints disappear. Growing popularity has assured that you can find pros who make and install concrete countertops nearly anywhere. The color comes from powder or liquid mortar dyes added to the concrete mix. Lincoln dumps in his pigments anywhere from 5 to 13 minutes into the 18-minute mixing cycle, depending on the desired effect. While some pros pour countertops on-site, most prefer to do it in the workshop, where they can control the process more closely. The work is done on a vibration table, a platform that floats on shock absorbers. Workers have about half an hour to spread the mixture after it’s poured into the form before it begins to set. Workers then use trowels to pull up water from the mixture and smooth the surface, a process that’s done intermittently for up to two hours. Topical sealers are more effective against staining than are penetrating types, but they create a glossier, less natural finish. Like a stone slab, it must be transported on its side to avoid cracking, especially around the sink cutout. The finished moss-green countertops, with matching backsplash, give the client’s three children added real estate for eating and drawing.
