Sprouts are an amazing addition to baby leaf salads and as an haute cuisine garnish strewn atop special main dishes. Transfer the seeds to a small container and cover them with at least three times as much cool water. Skim off any floating seeds or debris, then drain off the soaking water and rinse the seeds well with cool water. Put the soaked, drained seeds into a sprouter or a clean quart jar with a ventilated top (cheesecloth and a rubber band work fine). Put the seeds into a sprouter or clean quart jar with a ventilated top and keep them on the countertop away from direct light. Just toss them for a minute or two in a hot wok with a little vegetable oil. They’re a good companion for peanut butter, hummus, roast beef and tuna. After soaking we just spritz or dip in water a few times a day.

You can rinse some hulls off by dipping the sproutmaster in water to the top, and very gently swirling. Just make sure they aren’t damp, and use them within 2 days. I have tried soil and other sprouters and never had such incredible results. I use it for wheat-grass and plan to use for other seeds too. For soaking we place the sproutmaster in a larger rectangular dish of water.

It’s tall enough for most sprouts but for microgreens like pea shoots or sunflower, we invert a taller container over the sproutmaster till they’re ready for greening. I am very satisfied with my purchase and would recommend it to other people.

Three Tier Seed Sprouter Gardening Supplies and Garden Tools At Burpee by burpee.com

The tiers did drain too slowly with tiny broccoli and alfalfa sprouts, & got stuck in the little red draining caps, & were hard to clear out. The hard plastic will last for a hundred years or more, but the whole thing is now useless. In the photo you can see the little red caps (there’s one on each tier). Sometimes there is an air-lock or seed in the drain, use a toothpick. I rotate trays after they sprout, 3rd-4th day b/c top gets more light in kitchen. I don’t think city-water with chlorine is good, use bottled water if you can. Sprout three different kinds of grains or salad sprouts all at the same time!

But now my last draining cap has worn out and so no more tiers can work. The trays are fine, seeds do sprout but the red caps for the drain get clogged with seeds and they don’t drain well. Also, the trays don’t stack securely, the lip that fits into the top of one beneath it is too shallow and they tilt and unseat easily.

First, don’t use more than 1 level tablespoon of seeds in each tray, for broccoli or similar small seeds.

You can put the unit on top of a pan or plastic cake platter to pick up the bottom tray and not spill it everywhere, pour into bucket to use on plants. Plus, since you only use a couple tablespoons for each batch, 1 packet of seeds will last quite a while.
