From then until the present day, earthly constructions, and constructions from a myriad of other worlds, have been seen and recorded in our sky. In spite of constant denials and quite unbelievable explanations, the governments of the world have gradually been forced to give their attention to the matter and to create secret departments for investigation. Now such a remark is disquieting, not only to those old ladies who nightly peer beneath their beds for burglars, but also to the general public, down whose communal spine a slightly chilling sensation is apt to pass. For this latter notion we can thank those semi-scientists and self-appointed ‘experts’ who have simply failed to study the facts.
How To Clean Grout (Easy Household Cleaning Ideas That Save Time & Money) Clean My Space | Duration 4 Minutes 37 Seconds Scores of neatly parcelled explanations have been doled out which barely cover a few of the facts. To quote them all would require a volume the size of a city telephone directory. He looked up and saw six large disks about 2, 000 feet above him. Slowly they sank to within 500 feet of the sea, without a sound or whisper. Fragments landed in the water near the island, causing a loud hissing noise, whereupon the whole flight rose and shot off to sea. Reports circulated that dark and light coloured metal disks were among the droppings. They thought they were portholes, but admitted that they could have been vents through which some kind of powerful energy was flowing. There was a double row of ports or vents along the side from which came an unearthly white light. Four more saucers joined the group, giving the two pilots and their stewardess time to observe them thoroughly. At other times, when the flying object itself was visible to the eye, it has produced the kind of indefinite image on the radar screen associated with ionised air or radioactive clouds. The thing had physically disappeared, which even a schoolboy knows to he impossible. Unfortunately, most scientists and other ‘experts’ are not willing to be so broadminded. Apparently it is less ignoble to be suffering from collective illusion than from mass hysteria. In fact, flying saucers are everything except flying saucers. For a long time various world powers have, despite their contradictions and denials, been doing their utmost to build a flying saucer of their own. We shall be told that all the flying saucers seen to date (with the exception of illusions, balloons, etc., etc.) were experimental prototypes and nothing more. We find in fact that space vehicles are not a product of the twentieth century imagination, but have existed in human memory and records since our particular human family first began to think and to remember. They are shown as dark solid objects, flying in formation, in broad daylight. More, he provides considerable testimony to support his claims. They understood and wielded states of matter whose existence modern science barely suspects, and constructed forms outside the crippling limitations of tangible matter. Arnold certainly started something (revived would be more accurate), and from then on a steady stream of reports came in, mainly from trustworthy, observant citizens who had noticed that an early form of locomotion was once more active in the air. Thus it is the purpose of this book to find out just what that something could be the authorities do not wish us to know. On top of this comes an even hazier reassurance that the mystery has already been cleared up; that the skies have been purged of these ungodly objects and that there is nothing more to worry about. I would like to devote little time to proving or disproving the reality of these wonderful flying objects. For the past eighteen months barely a single day has gone by without flying saucers being reported somewhere in the world. On some days there have been as many as ten different sightings in different places. Five of them were slowly circling one that seemed to be in difficulties. Then suddenly there was a loud boom from the central disk and out fell a light, and a dark, metal object. And on the lower side, the airline pilots observed a row of eight or ten brilliantly lighted portholes. It was torpedo-shaped and glowed all over with a weird dark-blue light. Sometimes, ‘invisible’ flying saucers have produced the type of radar echo that indicates a solid body moving at high speed. The scientist’s explanation (which is the only explanation to our limited knowledge) is that the thing ‘dematerialised’ or rather translated itself into a higher octave of matter, quite beyond our present comprehension. The announcement adds that over 1, 800 sightings have been examined. At the time of first publication of the cloth-bound edition this figure had risen to ‘over 3, 000’. Eighteen hundred or not, the panic and possible alarm was swiftly allayed. Only that we may be sure that if, and when, the existence of such an aircraft is announced, it will also be declared as the cause of the mystery all along. So if the flying saucers are the experimental craft of modern governments, then we can only say that they have been experimenting a very long time.

Infrastructure by

In the same way, if you want a rocketpunk future, you are going to need some infrastructure in space or your spacecraft are not going to get very far either. The owners of the infrastructure will probably adjust the fees so it will be cheaper to use their services, but only barely. First of all, there’s the technology to build that airplane. There are ground controllers—that means radar and scopes and computers. That requires refineries to crack that oil (men to build and operate those refineries) and trucks to deliver it, tanks to store it. And entertainment—and specialized insurance—and airsickness bags in the back of each seat. The 747 could not exist until most of the support technology has already developed. All of it was oriented to fit the needs of the passenger as our culture has determined them. Her independence is an illusion, just as the independence of the 747 is an illusion. Or, if not home, then to a base with an equivalent technology. If there is an open ecological niche, some organism will move to fill it. Twenty years ago there was a clear emerging crisis in mineral resource supply. I decided it was more logi cal to mine five thousand miles up. You formed study committees, and committees to study those committees, and that was all you did. From the 1950s through the 1990s, my father invested his money in computer stocks. Propellant expense is bad enough, but that’s nothing compared to having to build a new spacecraft for each mission. With such flimsy construction it does not take much normal wear-and-tear to turn the spacecraft into junk. Now to make this work, in addition to the depots you will need sources of propellant and tankers and lighter to keep the depots filled up. Another problem area is the related but unknown costs of building the lunar mining base, the cislunar base, and the transport system to move the propellant from the lunar surface to the cislunar base, and how much that would add to the cost of lunar propellant. Even getting into lunar orbit from a cislunar location would waste fuel. It’s the propellant cost, along with some other good reasons. This also improves the safety factor, since smaller rocket engines can be used, and they do not fire as long. All named transport propellant loads include the return to base propellant, as all vehicles are reusable. At 4, 400 tons liftoff mass, we can subtract the dry mass to get the total propellant mass. I assume that this tanker is 30 tons, since it needs landing legs and it leaves the lunar surface with the same 150 tons of cargo, for a dry and payload mass of 180 tons. Having said that, creating these pieces of infrastructure will be very expensive. And you can be sure that whoever manages to build them will have iron control over who is allowed to use said infrastructure. It is possible to use spacecraft without any of this infrastructure, but it will be much more difficult. And of course an entertaining series of future histories can be postulated using various initial conditions. Does one privately owned corporation have a monopoly? That’s several hundred thousand pounds of airplane and three hundred people. That means the equipment and technology to lay down a perfectly flat runway two miles long. And reservation desks and communications systems to service those desks. Then you have to be ready for emergencies—so there will be rescue planes and fire trucks and medical equipment on hand. Passengers need meals, that demands another whole service industry. The very existence of the 747 as the kind of plane it is, is a direct result of what our culture considers important to the traveler. We would be mining fifteen miles down, or at the ocean bottom. Government first with my proposal for asteroid capture and mining. But after four years of constant debate, and many thousands of hours of my time preparing and presenting additional data, not one line of useful response had been drafted to my proposal. It will serve as the home for two hundred people, with ease. I will construct a succession of large, permanently occupied space stations using asteroidal materials. Increasing the mass ratio means things like making the walls of the propellant tanks thin like foil, and shaving down the support members so they are fragile like soda straws. Assuming that one of the primary purposes of such a base should be to supply lunar-derived propellant to vehicles in or departing from cislunar space, there are several immediate problems. It is very hard to estimate the cost of developing the mining base. Since most plans and sources do not mention refueling and logistics facilities as integral and initial parts of this project, such a “gateway” would neither be able to support a lunar base nor support dispensing lunar propellant produced by such a base, and are unlikely to be added later. So why is having a lunar-derived propellant supply in a near-lunar location so favorable? The multiple kinds of propellant uses may be confusing, but these distinctions are crucial to understanding the huge cost difference. During transit, this propellant can be kept in vehicles with cryo-coolers or in one or more propellant depots equipped with cryo-coolers. Assuming that the smaller tanker is about 25 tons and has its own cryo-coolers and sunshade, its structure and payload would weigh 175 tons. The empty 30-ton tanker will need just 25 tons of fuel (with a margin) to return to and land at its lunar base without its payload, so the structural mass, payload, and return fuel mass is 205 tons.
