Marble Sculpture: Characteristics Types History by visual-arts-cork.com

Marble has been used equally for relief sculpture and friezes, as well as the free-standing statue. In addition, the low refractory index of refraction of calcite permits light to penetrate into the stone (as it does the human skin), resulting in the typical “waxy” look which gives the stone a human appearance. Compared to the next best alternative stone, limestone, marble possesses a much finer grain, which makes it much easier for the sculptor to render minute detail. It is also extremely heavy, making transportation difficult. First, the artist typically makes a small maquette in wax or clay, over an armature or frame. A measuring frame is then placed over the model which records the locations of the tacks. The locations of the tacks are then transferred to the raw marble block, in a process known as pointing. Of course 20th-century sculptors now have an armoury of power tools, including stone-cutters, drills and other instruments, at their disposal. After the carving is completed, the rough surface of the statue must be finished off. Sometimes, tin and iron oxides or sealing compounds are applied to the surface to give it a highly reflective glowing exterior. Such painting was a specialist task performed by expert painter. In the case of important figurative sculptures, eyes might be inset with coloured enamel or glass, while copper might be applied to the nipples of the chest. The scheme remained problematical, however, and led frequently to marble statues being produced that were noticeably inferior to the clay originals. He said that it was his role as an artist to liberate the human form trapped inside the block by gradually chipping away at the stone surface.

Acrylic Painting Techniques Faux Finishes Marbling | Duration 3 Minutes 57 Seconds White marbles are especially prized for fine art sculpture because of their relative isotropy and homogeneity, and resistance to shattering. Marble can also be highly polished, making it ideal for decorative work. Marble is rarer, therefore more expensive than several other types of rock used in stone sculpture. Also, compared to bronze, marble has a lower tensile strength and is vulnerable to cracking when extended (ballet-style) poses are attempted. From this initial model, a full-size model is developed, into which tacks are inserted at key reference points. This involves knocking off sizeable chunks of unwanted stone, using a mallet and either a long point chisel, or a wedge-shaped pitching chisel. This can be done by abrading the surface with another stone called emery, or else sandpaper. All this abrading and polishing brings out the colour of the stone, and adds a sheen known as a patina.

When closing paint and stain cans, place a paper towel over the top to absorb splatters before tapping the lid closed. For example, oak, when finished, will result in a deeply grained look. To finish drawer knobs, sand them and then secure them to a piece of cardboard or the bottom of a box. A paper plate covered in foil makes a great paint container. To maintain the finish, simply clean the surface with a damp cloth and wipe dry. High humidity can cause the stain and paint to take longer to dry. Do not use tack cloths that contain linseed oil because they will contaminate the finish. The veins of the marble should look like lightning bolts or tree branches. I discovered a universe of different kinds, colours and shapes of marble. Every tile is different, every shape has no logic, moving lines are rining dots contributes to chaos and mess. Notice that every shape was wet-blended only on one side, leaving a marked line on the other. This final step helps to add a new tone (if you want it) and to smooth all of the previous line work. Sometimes paint was more diluted, resulting more transparent, some other it covers more. Stippling time: this is a new step, not applied on previous marble. Technique was the same as previously described, shapes were wet-blended on one side, maintaining a strong line on the other. This helps to integrate these lines “inside” the floor, as they are actually under the surface. This marble should result in much more variation to the colour and pattern. I understand that it could be not schematic and difficult to describe, but, again, it’s all randomness and feelings.
