An over-the-range microwave will save space, but it’s more work to install, and experts say it won’t do as good a job of venting heat and fumes from your stove as a dedicated range hood (which are covered in their own report). A few microwaves can be hung underneath a cabinet with a hanging kit. Don’t forget to allow space on the left for the door swing (virtually every microwave on the market opens from the right). Large appliance companies in general get poor reviews for customer service, so the more convenient it is to get your microwave repaired, the better. Countertop microwave ovens are the cheapest option, but they take up precious counter space. Many users say a better option is to build a shelf for a countertop microwave oven to sit on; adding an optional trim kit can give it the look of a built-in. Regardless of which option you choose, be sure to measure your space carefully so you know how big a microwave you can handle. Automatic settings for reheating and defrosting are also common.
Some shoppers go so far as to bring a large platter to the store when shopping to make sure it will fit inside. The good news is that most modern microwaves are pretty quiet. However, even models that the experts rate as quiet sometimes provoke complaints from owners about their loudness. So don’t discard these items without checking your warranty first. Is it safe to use a portable microwave in a confined shelfspace?
For proper ventilation, keep three inches of space between the oven’s top, sides, rear and the area where the unit is to be installed. As such there is not a lot of heat output from the unit, but there is expanding air as the food warms the air in the chamber. Make sure that its positioning does not cause you to be handling a hot dish at an awkward angle. A line with a number of other heavy duty appliances on it may pop circuit breakers. This isn’t an issue when it’s just sitting on a counter-top but a dedicated enclosure changes things. And plugging in a portable microwave doesn’t activate new code requirements, though installing a built-in one might.

Microwaves should last a minimum of 10 years or more, not 6. Is it possible to narrate a novel in a faux-historical style without alienating the reader?
If they are blocked during operation, the oven may overheat and eventually cause oven failure. The shelf would have that 3″ breather room but not much more. Reputable manufacturers are fairly conservative about their venting requirements.

Another consideration is clearance for the door swing and for moving dishes in and out of the unit. Also high shelves are a bit risky since you would be handling hot food at head and face level. Two Level Microwave Oven Cooking by practicallyedible.com
In earlier models, the microwaves were directed up at the “roof” of the oven, where a “mode mixer” fan would fan them back down into the oven in an attempt at evenly distributing them. Stacked like that, they would be very awkward and dangerous with hot food inside them. The literature with my new over the range micro didn’t even define two level cooking despite it being one of the features of my whirlpool model!
Two-level cooking / heating would not work great in the “bounce off roof” scenario, because the top dish would obviously bask in all the lovely radiation and not leave any for the dish below. March 2013.] that the metal racks are indeed meant to be used in microwave oven mode: the magic is that these models have their inside cavities “tuned” to the exact metal that the rack is made of, so that the microwaves won’t react with the metal of that rack. Depending on how you look at it, manufacturers either do a great job of hiding this feature, or a crappy job of promoting it. You’d think that the few models that do have this feature would list it right out there with the other features.
Our Remodeled Kitchen Island With Built In Microwave Shelf by drivenbydecor.com
Microwave Shelf Made From Recycled Lumber | Duration 6 Minutes 9 Seconds
I finished the project up by caulking and painting the “new” island and then simply added a few cookbooks and a basket for dishtowels on the bottom shelf and placed our new microwave on the top shelf. I actually moved our dining room end chairs into the space over the weekend just to see how they would look and was surprised at how “at home” they look there!
Sometimes they drop their leaves in just a day or two but other times they’ll last for about a week. We’ve only been using it for a few days but so far it hasn’t been an issue. Do you find it annoying to bend over for microwave stuff?
We are building a home and considering putting the microwave on the end of the island, but the commitment scares me, ha!
How did you figure out where to connect the microwave within the island?
Does it heat up the inside cabinets or are there are lingering smells?
We haven’t had any issues at all with heat or smells with ours. I still need to upholster and project #3 is finding chairs to create a little seating area at the end of our kitchen near the fireplace. I have wondered how practical such a low microwave is to use.
We didn’t have any counter space right next to our old microwave so it’s actually nice to have the space to set your plate right above it. I could get our microwave off the counter – someday!
Definitely worth the trade-off for the extra counter space by the sink!
I like a microwave that’s out of the way…one of those essential kitchen tools, but too bulky to sit on the counter. Your reno looks wonderful and it’s so nice to free up counter space!
After a few days we have all adjusted to it’s new spot and the trade-off for regaining that counter space is so well worth it to me!
My husband especially was really wary of having the microwave down low but he’s totally good with it now that we’ve done it!
I added about two inches to the depth measurement of my microwave (also allowing space for the cord to get plugged in behind it!).
